The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a severe weather alert forecasting prolonged thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across numerous states in Northern Nigeria from Saturday to Monday. The agency has urged residents to remain vigilant for signs of strong winds and potentially damaging weather disturbances.
Detailed Weather Forecast
According to NiMet's weather outlook released in Abuja on Friday, early morning thunderstorms are expected to affect parts of Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Adamawa states on Saturday. Later in the day, thunderstorms accompanied by rain will extend to Borno, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi states.
The forecast indicates that weather disruptions will continue on Sunday along the northern belt. Early morning thunderstorms are expected in Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states, with rain showers later spreading to Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Gombe, and Bauchi states.
The same pattern is predicted to persist into Monday, with likely early morning thunderstorms in Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba states.
Safety Warnings and Precautions
NiMet has specifically warned about severe winds preceding the thunderstorms, which pose significant dangers to both people and property. "Make sure that loose items where you live are secured as they can become missiles when the wind speed increases," the agency advised.
Communities have been advised to take additional precautions during rainfall, including:
- Avoiding travel during heavy rainfall
- Unplugging electrical appliances during thunderstorms
- Staying away from tall trees that could fall during high winds
Airline operators have also been advised to contact NiMet for airport-specific weather reports to ensure safe flight operations during this forecast period.
The meteorological agency continues to monitor the situation closely and may provide updates as weather conditions evolve.
