The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory has announced the passing of Rev. Fr. Dr. Polycarp Lubo, who served as both the CAN Chairman of Plateau State and Treasurer of Northern CAN.
According to a statement issued by Northern CAN Chairman, Rev. Dr. Joseph Hayab, Fr. Lubo died on Sunday following complications from injuries sustained in a recent accident after a brief illness.
A Legacy of Service and Interfaith Collaboration
The statement described the late cleric as "a courageous and devoted servant of God who lived for truth, justice, peace, and protection of the vulnerable." His powerful declaration during the Plateau Peace Walk that "we deserve to live" resonated as a collective cry for victims of violence and injustice across Plateau State and Nigeria at large.
Until his death, Fr. Lubo served as the Parish Priest of St. William's Catholic Church in Zawan. He was widely respected for his humility, jovial spirit, and commitment to cross-community engagement that transcended religious boundaries.
Beyond his ecclesiastical duties, the late priest played a significant role in interfaith initiatives, collaborating with other faith leaders under the Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development to promote immunization and support polio eradication efforts in Nigeria.
Contributions to CAN and the Christian Community
As treasurer of Northern CAN, Fr. Lubo brought financial accountability and administrative strength to the association. His passing has created what the statement described as "a significant void within the Northern Christian community."
CAN has extended heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos, the Plateau State CAN leadership, his parishioners, and the broader Christian family in Nigeria.
The association's statement did not include details regarding funeral arrangements or succession plans for the leadership positions left vacant by Fr. Lubo's passing.
