Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has clarified that his participation in a coalition ahead of the 2027 elections is driven by a desire to combat bad governance, hunger, and poverty rather than personal political ambition.
Speaking at an event organized by the Anglican Church in Kubwa, Obi addressed reports of an alleged agreement with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that would see him serve as Atiku's running mate in the upcoming 2027 elections.
According to these reports, Atiku had purportedly agreed to serve only one term if elected and was willing to formalize this arrangement in writing. However, when questioned about this alleged agreement, Obi neither confirmed nor denied its existence.
"You can make the report what you want, but I'm in a coalition against bad governance, hunger, and poverty," Obi stated, emphasizing his focus on national development and social welfare rather than political positioning.
The statement comes amid increasing political realignments as various political figures position themselves for the 2027 general elections. Obi's remarks suggest his primary concern remains addressing Nigeria's pressing socio-economic challenges rather than securing a specific political office.
Political analysts note that Obi's response leaves room for interpretation regarding his specific role in any coalition arrangements, while clearly establishing his stated priorities for joining such alliances.
