The Nigerian Army has initiated a formal investigation into allegations that soldiers assaulted a police detective during a community gathering in Ebonyi State, military authorities announced on Monday.

Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff, has directed a "thorough and transparent investigation" into the incident that reportedly occurred on May 1, 2025, in Mgbom N'Achara community of Ohaozara Local Government Area.

According to reports, Detective Ngene from the Ebonyi State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was hospitalized following an alleged brutal assault by soldiers while he conducted an undercover operation during a traditional ruler election in the community.

The detective, who is also a native of the Mgbom N'Achara Autonomous Community, was reportedly monitoring the election proceedings at Mgbom Central School when the incident occurred.

Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, in a statement issued from Abuja, emphasized the Army's commitment to professionalism and accountability.

"This is in line with the Nigerian Army's commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities," the statement read.

The Army spokesperson assured the public that the investigation would be impartial and that any soldier found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with military regulations.

"While the investigation is ongoing, we urge all law-abiding citizens to remain calm. Details of the investigation will be made public to ensure transparency and accountability," Lt. Col. Anele added.

The military has reiterated its dedication to maintaining peace, national security, and public trust while performing its constitutional duties.
