Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has issued a stern warning to National Assembly members elected under the People's Democratic Party (PDP), telling them to "start packing out" ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor made this declaration during the Citizen Engagement Programme (JSGCEP) tagged "Gwamnati da Jamaa" held in Dutse local government area, where he received over 3,502 defectors from opposition parties including the PDP and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
"There is strong indication that all the positions won by the opposition parties during the 2023 general election will be reclaimed by the ruling party," Namadi stated confidently, pointing to growing support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
The governor specifically highlighted the southwestern zone of Jigawa as an area where APC is gaining significant traction. "With what we are witnessing these days in Birnin Kudu, Buji, and today in Dutse all from this zone, all the elected members of the National Assembly from opposition parties should start counting their days in the Red and Green chamber," he declared.
Namadi attributed this shift to what he described as the APC's "commitment towards human and capital development" in the state, suggesting that voters would no longer support opposition candidates in the next election cycle.
The governor's comments come against the backdrop of PDP's significant presence in the region, having won seats for the South-South senatorial zone, House of Representatives positions in Birninkudu/Buji and Dutse/Kiyawa Federal constituencies, as well as the Birninkudu state assembly constituency during the 2023 elections.
The mass defection of over 3,500 opposition members to the APC appears to have bolstered the governor's confidence about his party's prospects in the upcoming 2027 elections, potentially reshaping the political landscape in Jigawa State.
