Nigeria's Flying Eagles have secured the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations after defeating hosts Egypt 4-1 on penalties in the third-place playoff match held on Sunday at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium in Cairo.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw after regulation time, forcing the decision to be made through a penalty shootout where the Nigerian side demonstrated superior composure.

Flying Eagles attacking midfielder Mathew Kingsley expressed his satisfaction with the team's achievement, despite falling short of their ultimate goal of winning the tournament.

"I am extremely happy that at least we are not going back empty handed," Kingsley said after the game. "Unfortunately this is not what we bargained for but most importantly we have qualified for the world cup."

The midfielder also emphasized the team's determination to build on this achievement as they prepare for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup. "We will work hard to ensure we improve on this achievement as we prepare for the world cup," he added.

Coach Aliyu Zubairu's side showed resilience throughout the tournament, and while they missed out on the final, securing both a bronze medal and World Cup qualification represents a significant accomplishment for the Nigerian youth team.

The victory over Egypt provides a positive conclusion to the Flying Eagles' campaign in the continental championship and gives them momentum as they look ahead to competing on the global stage.
