Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has expressed optimism that Nigeria can still secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their current challenging position in the qualifying group.
The 59-year-old tactician, who briefly led the national team on an interim basis following Finidi George's resignation after just two matches, believes the team has what it takes to overcome their present struggles.
"It's a tight rope we're walking, but everything is possible," Eguavoen told reporters. "With the boys we have now and every Nigerian coming together, it is doable. I'm 100% sure because the players want to be at the World Cup."
Current Standing and Challenges
The Super Eagles currently sit fourth in their World Cup qualifying group, a position that puts their qualification hopes in jeopardy. Under current coach Eric Chelle, who was appointed on a permanent basis after Eguavoen helped the team qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria will need maximum points from their remaining fixtures to have any chance of clinching the sole qualification ticket.
Despite the difficult situation, Eguavoen advocates for a forward-looking approach. "I'm not looking back at the last game, I'm looking forward to the next one. That's the mindset: one game at a time, treat every game like a final," he emphasized.
Path to Qualification
For the three-time African champions to secure a World Cup berth, they must win their remaining qualifying matches and hope for favorable results in other fixtures. The pressure is mounting on Coach Chelle, who remains unbeaten since taking charge but faces the daunting task of navigating the team through this critical qualification phase.
The Super Eagles have historically been one of Africa's strongest representatives at the World Cup, having qualified for six of the last seven tournaments. Missing out on the 2026 edition would be a significant setback for Nigerian football.
Football analysts note that the team's qualification campaign has been hampered by inconsistent performances and tactical issues that need urgent addressing if they are to realize their World Cup ambitions.
