The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a stark warning about the future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that the party cannot win the 2027 elections and that selfish interests may ultimately destroy it.

Speaking during his monthly press conference in Abuja on Monday, Wike emphasized the critical importance of leadership within the party, suggesting that the PDP's current approach is fundamentally flawed.

"Leadership is key, if you don't show the right leadership you will suffer for it and this is what I have been saying," Wike declared.

The minister highlighted what he perceives as double standards within the party, pointing to the case of the Delta State governor and his predecessor who moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to Wike, they were criticized merely for supporting President Tinubu, while the PDP's Board of Trustees Chairman faced no backlash for endorsing Labour Party's Alex Otti for a second term as governor.

"The Chairman of PDP BoT adopted Alex Otti, governor under Labour Party, for second tenure. No opposition party allows impunity, it's only the ruling party," Wike stated.

Wike also expressed frustration at what he sees as the party's misplaced priorities, claiming that instead of focusing on strategies to regain power, PDP leadership is fixated on targeting him for serving as a minister in the APC government.

"How many times have they made efforts? How many people have you wooed? Rather they are after Wike, they abandoned what they are supposed to do – the only crime is that Wike is a minister under APC government," he said.

The FCT Minister defended his political record, stating: "I'm the only former governor who did not support the presidential candidate but made sure PDP won 100 percent in the governorship, State Assembly and National Assembly. Let any sitting governor or former governor come out to say that happened in their states."

In a direct warning to his party, Wike cautioned against repeating the strategies employed in the 2023 elections. "If PDP doesn't take care, watch out for what will happen because selfish interest can kill an organization. You haven't won an election but you are excluding people. You want to play the same game you played in 2023, it will backfire," he warned.

Wike concluded with a pointed message to party strategists: "I have told people that this smartness will not help you. Wike is telling you now to stop this smartness."

These comments come amid ongoing tensions within Nigeria's main opposition party, raising questions about its unity and strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
