The Nigerian Senate on Thursday constituted a 20-member committee tasked with planning a national summit on security to address the persistent security challenges plaguing the country.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the committee during plenary after receiving majority support through voice votes. The committee will be chaired by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC Ekiti Central), with Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (APC Kebbi North) serving as vice chairman.
The committee membership reflects broad representation across political parties and geopolitical zones, including Senators Ireti Kingibe (LP FCT), Idiat Adebule (APC Lagos West), Barinada Mpigi (PDP Rivers), Babangida Hussaini (APC Jigawa North West), and former Senate President Ahmed Lawan (APC Yobe North), among others.
Other notable members include former governors Adams Oshiomhole (APC Edo) and Gbenga Daniel (APC Ogun East), alongside Senators Titus Zam, Abdulaziz Yar'adua, Austin Akobundu, Shehu Buba, Emmanuel Udende, Shuaib Salisu, Isah Jibrin, and the Clerk of the Senate, Andrew Nwoba.
The committee's primary responsibility is to design a comprehensive framework for the proposed national summit, including developing the agenda, identifying key discussion points, and proposing actionable strategies to effectively tackle Nigeria's security challenges.
Akpabio directed the committee to submit its report within two weeks. This development follows the Senate's resolution on May 6 to organize a two-day national summit focused on addressing security challenges such as terrorism and insurgency that continue to affect various parts of the country.
The formation of this committee underscores the Senate's commitment to finding lasting solutions to Nigeria's complex security issues through inclusive dialogue and strategic planning.
