The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of five Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during its plenary session on Wednesday.

The confirmation followed the presentation of a report by the Committee on INEC, chaired by Senator Simon Lalong, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Plateau State.

The newly confirmed RECs include Umar Garba representing Kano State, Sa'ad Idris from Bauchi State, Chukwemeka Ibeziako from Anambra State, Umar Mukhtar from Borno State, and Dr. Johnson Sinkiem from Bayelsa State.

In his presentation to the Senate, Senator Lalong stated that the committee thoroughly examined the nominees' resumes, work experiences, and career progression during the screening process.

"After carefully scrutinising all the relevant documents of the nominees and due consideration of their levels of exposure, experiences, performances, qualifications and integrity, this committee hereby recommends that Senate confirm the nominees," Lalong said.

The committee chairman further noted that all nominees responded satisfactorily to questions during their screening and were deemed qualified for the appointments.

The confirmation of these RECs comes at a crucial time as INEC continues to prepare for upcoming electoral activities across the country. Resident Electoral Commissioners play vital roles in overseeing election operations at the state level and ensuring compliance with electoral guidelines.

The appointment of these commissioners is expected to strengthen INEC's operational capacity and enhance the commission's preparedness for future elections.
