President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to visit Abia State on May 23, 2025, to commission several infrastructure projects, including the newly rebuilt 6.5-kilometre Port Harcourt Road in Aba, according to Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.
The road, which had remained in a dilapidated state for over 15 years, has been successfully reconstructed by Governor Alex Otti's administration, marking a significant infrastructure milestone for the state.
Umahi disclosed this during an inspection of damage at the Osisioma axis of the 56-kilometre Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway, which runs from Abia Tower of Peace in Umuahia to Rail Flyover in Aba.
"You know Otti is my relation and doing good while in office runs in our veins, so, I'm not surprised at what he is doing," the Minister stated, commending the governor for both completing the road project and ensuring quality workmanship.
Regarding the damaged portions of the expressway at Osisioma, approximately two kilometers in length, Umahi directed the Controller of Works in Abia to halt the activities of the contractor handling underground drainage work for the Abia State government, which reportedly caused the damage.
The Minister promised to meet with Governor Otti to discuss the best approach to resolving the issue and ensure proper coordination between state and federal infrastructure projects.
In a related development, Umahi announced that the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, which has been under reconstruction since 2013, will be completed by November this year. President Tinubu is expected to commission this federal project upon completion.
The presidential visit highlights the federal government's attention to infrastructure development in the South-East region, with both state and federal projects receiving significant focus.
