Former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam has painted a grim picture of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that Nigeria's main opposition party is currently in the "Intensive Care Unit" with uncertain chances of recovery.

Speaking on Arise Television's Morning Show programme on Tuesday, Suswam expressed concern about the party's future amid its ongoing internal crisis, suggesting that many political observers are "waiting to see the ultimate end of the party."

"It is incumbent upon the PDP governors to ensure that the party is rescued. Many people are waiting to see the ultimate end of the party. Whether there will be light at the end of the tunnel through the intervention of Sen. Saraki remains to be seen in the coming days," Suswam stated.

The former governor added: "For now, the PDP is in the hospital, currently in the ICU, but it can be saved if the proper medicines are taken."

Suswam's comments come shortly after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike made a surprise appearance at the party's expanded Governors' Forum meeting in Abuja. Wike's attendance marked his first participation in a PDP function in months, amid heightened tensions and defections that have plagued the opposition party.

The PDP has been facing significant challenges since its defeat in the 2023 general elections, with internal conflicts between various factions threatening its unity and relevance in Nigeria's political landscape.

Political analysts view Suswam's assessment as particularly significant given his status as a prominent PDP figure and former governor. His characterization of the party as being in ICU highlights the severity of the crisis and the urgent need for reconciliation among party leaders.

The coming weeks will be crucial for the PDP as it attempts to address internal divisions and reposition itself as a viable opposition ahead of future electoral contests.
