The Osun State Security Network Agency, commonly known as Amotekun Corps, has successfully foiled an armed robbery attempt targeting a trailer loaded with iron rods valued at approximately ₦50 million. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday along the Gbongan-Osogbo Road at Bisi Akande Trumpet bridge in Ayedaade local government area of Osun State.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by Yusuf Idowu Abass, the Public Relations Officer of Osun Amotekun, the trailer was transporting forty tons of iron rods from Shagamu to Osogbo when it was trailed by an unidentified Toyota Corolla vehicle from Ikire.

The statement detailed that at approximately 1:00 am, four armed men intercepted the moving truck near the Gbongan overhead bridge. The assailants posed as task force officers and demanded to see the waybill from the driver.

"The driver, noticing their suspicious behaviour, quickly realised that something was amiss," the statement read. One of the armed men was reportedly overheard saying, "Let us do what we want to do quickly before people start coming out."

During the confrontation, the driver was assaulted while maintaining his grip on the steering wheel, refusing to surrender the vehicle. The armed men forcibly took his apprentice's phone and attempted to wrest control of the wheel from him.

In a display of courage, the driver managed to push the armed men, causing them and the apprentice to fall into the nearby bush. He then began shouting to attract attention and fled into the bush for safety. While in hiding, he contacted his employer, who promptly informed the Corps Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Chief Dr. Hon. Adekunle Isaac Omoyele.

Commander Omoyele immediately alerted the Amotekun Command in Ayedaade Local Government, which responded swiftly to the scene. Their rapid intervention led to the foiling of the attack, the rescue of both the driver and his apprentice, and the securing of the 40 tons of iron rods valued at ₦50 million.

The Amotekun Corps has reassured residents of Osun State of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property throughout the state. The security agency emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on crime and criminal activities in all parts of Osun.

This successful operation highlights the effectiveness of the regional security outfit in combating highway robbery and other criminal activities in the Southwest region of Nigeria.
