The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Agbo Gilbert Major, has declared that the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is no longer a member of the party, stating that his membership ceased in 2023.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV's Daily Politics program, Major emphasized that the NNPP has "no business" with Kwankwaso as he is not recognized as a member of the political party.

"Let me make it clear that there are more serious issues to talk about than to talk about Kwankwaso as a person. I'm not here to talk about him. He's become part of the history of NNPP. At a point, he came in, and at a point, he left with his Kwankwasiyya Movement. So, I don't want to talk about him," Major stated.

The NNPP chairman further explained that Kwankwaso's membership termination is supported by provisions in the party's constitution and declarations from various courts, including the Abia High Court and FCT High Court.

Addressing the recent wave of defections affecting opposition parties, including the NNPP, Major noted that those who left were primarily active members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement who had grown dissatisfied with how the movement was being managed.

"If you look at the CV of the people that have defected, you'd see that they were very active members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement. In fact, they were very instrumental to the success of the NNPP across Kano," he said.

Major emphasized that these defectors had issues with the Kwankwasiyya Movement's operations rather than with the NNPP as a political entity.

When questioned about Kwankwaso's reported relationship with the presidency, Major dismissed any concerns, stating: "I want you to put yourself in my shoes. Would you be worried if somebody – who for over a year now has not been a member of your party – is walking into another political party? Why should that disturb you?"

"The man is gone. I told you that he is part of the history of NNPP. He came at a point and left. I don't want to talk about him. I want to discuss things that would further enhance our operational capacity," Major added.

The NNPP chairman concluded by reiterating that Kwankwaso has the freedom to associate with any political party of his choice, as he ceased to be a member of the NNPP since June 2023.
