A 32-year-old man identified as Kehinde Amodu has been remanded in the Ilesa Correctional Centre for allegedly breaking into the Osun State High Court and stealing electrical appliances worth N700,000.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on May 3, 2025, at approximately 3:00 pm when Amodu allegedly gained unlawful access to the court premises in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, during working hours.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Kayode, told the Osogbo Magistrates' Court that the defendant stole an air conditioner and a ceiling fan from offices within the court premises. The stolen items were valued at seven hundred thousand naira (N700,000) and were properties of the Osun State Judiciary.
Amodu was charged with two counts of unlawful entry and theft. The first count stated that he unlawfully entered the premises of the High Court, an offense contrary to and punishable under section 412 of the Criminal Code CAP 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.
The second count charged him with stealing one air conditioner and one ceiling fan valued at N700,000, an offense contrary to section 383 and punishable under section 390(9) of the Criminal Code CAP 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.
When the charges were read to him, Amodu pleaded guilty to the first count of unlawful entry into the court premises but denied the theft allegation in the second count.
Chief Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara, who presided over the case, ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ilesa Correctional Centre pending further hearing on the charges.
The case has been adjourned until May 22, 2025, for continuation of hearing and determination of the theft charge.
