A member of the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon. Zubairu Hamza Masu, has officially defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Masu, who represents the Sumaila constituency, announced his decision in a formal resignation letter addressed to the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Ismail Falgore. The letter was read during Monday's plenary session, marking his official exit from the NNPP effective May 12, 2025.
In his resignation letter, the lawmaker cited internal crises within the NNPP as the primary reason for his departure. He specifically mentioned party factionalisation and ongoing legal disputes that have plagued the party's operations.
"The leadership tussles within the NNPP have become untenable," Masu stated in his letter. He highlighted the multiple claims to leadership positions at both state and national levels as particularly problematic.
At the state level, Masu pointed to conflicts between Dr. Suleiman Hashim Dungurawa and Senator Mas'ud El-Jibrin Doguwa. Meanwhile, at the national level, Dr. Ahmed Ajuji and Dr. Agbo Major have been involved in parallel claims to the party's chairmanship.
These leadership disputes have resulted in protracted court battles that, according to Masu, threaten the overall stability of the NNPP.
Upon joining the APC, the lawmaker pledged his allegiance to the party's leadership structure at all levels – ward, state, and national. This move further strengthens the APC's position in the Kano State House of Assembly.
Political analysts view this defection as potentially significant in the shifting political landscape of Kano State, where the NNPP has been facing increasing internal challenges.
