A High Court in Kano State has sentenced Adamu Isma'ila Arzai to death by hanging after finding him guilty of killing his friend during an argument over a cap.
The tragic incident occurred in 2016 when Arzai and the victim, Auwal Shehu Kabara, were traveling to Bauchi for a business trip. What began as a disagreement over a cap escalated into violence, resulting in Arzai stabbing Kabara to death.
During the trial, the prosecution team led by Wahida Isma'il presented five witnesses to establish their case against the defendant. Arzai also testified in his own defense during the proceedings.
In his judgment delivered on Monday, Justice Muhammad Musa Karaye ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court found Arzai guilty of murder and sentenced him to death by hanging.
"After careful consideration of the evidence presented before this court, I find the defendant guilty of murder and hereby sentence him to death by hanging," Justice Karaye declared in his ruling.
This case highlights the severe consequences of uncontrolled anger and violence, as a seemingly minor dispute over a cap resulted in one man losing his life and another now facing the death penalty.
The ruling adds to a series of recent death sentences handed down by Nigerian courts for murder cases, including a recent judgment in Ebonyi State where four individuals were sentenced to death by hanging for murder.
