The House of Representatives has issued a directive to security agencies to intensify efforts for the release of 18 persons abducted by sea pirates in the Degema coastal area of Rivers State.
The directive came following a motion presented under Matters of Urgent National Importance by Hon. Cyril Hart, who represents the Degema/Bonny Federal Constituency, during Tuesday's plenary session.
Hart raised concerns about the abduction incident that occurred in March, highlighting that among the 18 captives is a pregnant woman, which adds urgency to their rescue operation.
During the debate on the motion, a lawmaker representing Baruten/Ikalama Federal Constituency in Kwara State urged the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta to address the situation promptly.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, subsequently referred the motion to the Committee on Navy and Police for further legislative action.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the coastal regions of Rivers State, where sea piracy continues to threaten the safety of residents and travelers.
The House's intervention comes amid growing concerns about the welfare of the abductees, who have been in captivity for nearly two months, according to the timeline presented by Hon. Hart.
Security experts have previously highlighted the vulnerability of Nigeria's waterways, particularly in the Niger Delta region, to piracy and criminal activities, calling for enhanced maritime security measures.
