Abia State government held a special night of tributes on Tuesday to honor the late Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Comrade Sunny Onwuma, who passed away recently at the age of 62.
During the memorial service, Governor Alex Otti expressed his appreciation for the late commissioner's contributions, particularly highlighting Onwuma's approach to resolving labour issues in the state since their paths first crossed.
"It was a pleasure working with him," Governor Otti remarked. "We followed him until he passed on. It is difficult to be reminded that he will no longer be with us in EXCO, he will no longer be the bridge builder."
The Governor noted that Onwuma consistently delivered results whenever he was tasked with intervening on labour matters in Abia State. He also reflected on the importance of living a life worthy of positive remembrance.
"We should always ponder about what people would say of us when we are no more," Otti advised those present at the tribute night.
The Governor assured the bereaved family of the state government's support during this difficult time. "As a government, we will do everything that is possible to support the family," he pledged.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Abia State, Comrade Ihechi Eneogwe, described the deceased as "a distinguished labour leader and a dedicated servant."
Onwuma, who previously served as TUC Chairman in Abia State before his appointment as Commissioner, will be laid to rest on Thursday, May 15, 2025, in his hometown of Isiala-Ihie in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area of the state.
