A residential building in Moniya area of Ibadan, Oyo State capital, was engulfed by fire on Friday, destroying properties estimated to be worth millions of naira.
The incident occurred at Ori-Eni Apapa Ojeomo Road in Moniya, affecting a three-bedroom flat. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the fire outbreak.
Hon. Maroof Akinwande, Chairman of Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident, stating that fire personnel led by ACFS Adedeji promptly responded to the scene.
"On arrival, it was a private residential building of three bedrooms flat engulfed by fire. We swiftly swung into action and restricted the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and properties," Akinwande explained.
According to the fire service chairman, the cause of the fire was attributed to the overheating of a cooking appliance that had been left plugged in and unattended in the kitchen. The overheated appliance ignited nearby combustible materials, resulting in the blaze that consumed the building.
"No casualty was recorded but properties worth millions of naira were destroyed by fire. The fire service was able to save all the nearby buildings and properties from the devastating fire," he added.
The Oyo State Fire Service worked jointly with the Federal Fire Service to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent properties.
This incident occurred just hours after another residential building was reported to have been engulfed by fire in Ogbomoso, also in Oyo State, pointing to a concerning pattern of fire outbreaks in the state.
Residents are advised to exercise caution with electrical appliances and ensure they are properly switched off when not in use to prevent similar incidents.
