The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the appointment of 17 underwriting firms to provide group life insurance coverage for President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, ministers, and federal civil servants for the 2025/2026 policy year.
This announcement was made by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, while briefing State House Correspondents after the FEC meeting chaired by President Tinubu on Monday.
According to Walson-Jack, the scheme underscores the importance the Tinubu administration places on the welfare of workers, particularly federal civil servants.
"The Group Life Insurance Scheme is a scheme whereby the federal government has taken out a life policy on each public servant. This means that if the unfortunate incident of death occurs, the deceased public servant's next of kin stands to have a benefit to help the family cushion the loss at that time," she explained.
The coverage extends beyond top government officials to include staff of federal government ministries and treasury-funded agencies. It also covers prime military agencies such as the Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Nigeria Correctional Service, Federal Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
Walson-Jack emphasized that the Group Life Insurance Scheme is an annual policy, and the newly approved coverage for 2025/2026 will commence from the date of premium payment to underwriters, in line with the "no premium, no cover" policy.
She noted that despite the policy's existence throughout the current and previous administrations, many people remain unaware of it. As a result, her office plans to conduct a sensitization campaign in the near future.
"This administration has placed the welfare of the public servant very highly, so that no deceased public officer's family should be left without succour," Walson-Jack stated, highlighting the government's commitment to ensuring financial support for families of deceased public servants.
