Award-winning Nigerian singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that journalism would have been his career path if he had not ventured into music.
The Afrobeats superstar made this disclosure during a recent interview with 96.1 The Beat, Atlanta, while explaining why he engages in press and media promotion more frequently than many of his industry colleagues.
"I like promo, I like conversations. A lot of people don't know that I studied marketing apart from business management. I like to market myself, I love to talk," Davido stated. "If I had a podcast, I could talk for like three to four days," he added with a laugh.
The "Timeless" crooner emphasized that engaging with the media is an integral part of being an artist, though he acknowledged that many prominent musicians avoid press interactions. "A lot of big artists don't do press but I do because I can talk. But some people just don't want to talk," he explained.
Davido further highlighted his natural curiosity and thirst for knowledge as qualities that would have made him suitable for journalism. "When people meet me, I like to have conversations, I like to know things, I like information. Even at home, I'm also researching. If I wasn't doing music, I will definitely be in journalism," he affirmed.
The multiple award-winning artist also touched on his work ethic, suggesting it as a reason for his massive social media following. "A lot of people in my position would just sit down and let everything work for them. People be asking me why I got the most followers, it's because I'm working," Davido stated.
Drawing a parallel with international stars, he added, "I know how hard Beyonce will work with all the money she got."
Davido, who studied Business Administration with a focus on marketing at Babcock University, has consistently maintained a strong media presence throughout his career, which has spanned over a decade in the Nigerian music industry.
