Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed that his recent hit song 'With You' featuring Omah Lay was inspired by veteran Nigerian highlife musician Bright Chimezie's classic track 'Because of English'.
The DMW boss made this revelation during a FaceTime conversation with the legendary musician, footage of which he shared on social media. In the video, Davido expressed his admiration for Chimezie's work and how it influenced the standout track from his recently released fifth studio album, '5ive'.
"The latest hit I just did with Omah Lay, I used inspiration from your song, 'Because of English'," Davido told Chimezie during their conversation. When the veteran asked for confirmation, Davido enthusiastically responded, "Yes o, I will tell them to play it for you. It's trending everywhere, the whole world."
The international star also expressed his desire to meet Chimezie in person, suggesting that arrangements could be made for the veteran to visit Lagos. "I'm still around for a bit, so I was telling them maybe we will get you to come to Lagos so we will meet. It would be nice," Davido said. Chimezie warmly received the invitation, responding, "Okay, that would be wonderful, that would be nice."
Bright Chimezie, known for pioneering the Zigima sound, has been a significant influence in Nigerian music since the 1980s. He introduced his Zigima Movement to the music scene with his debut album, 'Respect Africa' in 1984. His sophomore album 'Life of Yesterday,' released in early 1987, included popular tracks like 'No True Love', 'Nne m Oma', and 'Message Boy'. Throughout his illustrious career, Chimezie has released eight studio albums.
This acknowledgment from Davido highlights the continuing influence of Nigeria's musical pioneers on the current generation of Afrobeats stars, creating a bridge between traditional highlife and contemporary sounds that have gained global recognition.
