Nigerian Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has publicly acknowledged legendary highlife maestro Bright Chimezie as the inspiration behind his new hit song "With You" featuring Omah Lay.

In a video call that has since gone viral on social media, Davido was seen expressing his admiration to the veteran musician, revealing that Chimezie's timeless classic 'Because of English' served as the creative foundation for "With You," which is currently a standout track from his fifth studio album.

"The latest hit I just did with Omah Lay, I used inspiration from your song, 'Because of English,'" Davido told the highlife icon during their conversation. When Chimezie showed interest, Davido added, "I will tell them to play it for you. It's trending everywhere, the whole world."

Responding to the acknowledgment, Bright Chimezie posted a video on his Instagram page on Thursday, where he was seen joyfully dancing to "With You" while praising both Davido and Omah Lay for their creative work.

"You can see I am vibing to the song already. It's a beautiful piece of work, very wonderful. I appreciate the fact that you said you picked the inspiration from this song I recorded many years ago; I appreciate you for that," Chimezie said in the video.

Davido, showing deep respect for the music legend, responded in Igbo language: "Ihe di ka gi akokwala m. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, Ezigbote Onye Egwu," which translates to "People like you inspire me. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, a true music legend."

"With You," produced by beatmaker Tempoe, masterfully blends traditional highlife elements with modern Afrobeats and funk influences, creating a sound reminiscent of Nigeria's musical golden age of the 1970s and 1980s—an era when artists like Bright Chimezie helped establish the foundation of Nigerian popular music.

This musical exchange between generations highlights the continuing influence of Nigeria's rich musical heritage on contemporary Afrobeats, which has gained global recognition in recent years.
