A member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yusuf Adamu Gadgi, has raised alarm over Boko Haram's seizure of military weapons and assets valued at trillions of naira from military installations across Nigeria's North-East region.
The lawmaker made this revelation while contributing to a motion presented by Honourable Ahmed Satomi from Borno State regarding the recent fire outbreak at Giwa Barracks' arms depot in Maiduguri and the escalating Boko Haram attacks in Borno and Yobe states.
"I was shocked by what Boko Haram did at Giwa Barracks and other military facilities. There's a serious threat to the security and safety of Nigerians, and even to the country itself," Gadgi stated.
According to the representative, the National Assembly had allocated substantial funds for the acquisition of over 40 combat vehicles and other military equipment amounting to trillions of naira to enhance national security.
"How can we guarantee the safety of the people under such conditions, when insurgents can seize these weapons?" he questioned, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Gadgi called for immediate presidential intervention, urging an investigation into the conduct of top military commanders and security agencies. "The President must launch an investigation into the conduct of top military commanders and other security agencies, and take appropriate action," he emphasized.
The lawmaker further suggested that security agencies should be summoned to explain their failures in protecting military assets and civilian populations from insurgent attacks.
In a stark warning about potential consequences, Gadgi cautioned that continued government inaction could lead to a breakdown of public trust and social order.
"If action is not taken quickly, Nigerians may be forced to defend themselves, and they could begin to see us, their leaders, as enemies—just like they see Boko Haram," he warned.
The revelation comes amid growing concerns about the resurgence of insurgent activities in Nigeria's northeastern region, despite repeated government claims of having technically defeated the terrorist group.
