The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the military parade originally planned to mark Nigeria's 26th Democracy Day celebration on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

According to a statement released by Abdulhakeem Adeoye on behalf of the committee's Director of Information & Public Relations, President Bola Tinubu will instead address the nation at 7:00 am on Thursday morning.

The statement further revealed that the President will participate in a special joint session of the National Assembly at 12 noon. This session is expected to focus on the State of the Nation, reflections on Nigeria's democratic journey, and renewed calls for national unity and reform initiatives.

Public Lecture on Democratic Reforms

A public lecture has been scheduled for 4:00 pm at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. The event will bring together government officials, political leaders, and civil society stakeholders under the theme: "Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria's Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms."

BenriNews reports that this change in the Democracy Day program comes as the nation prepares to reflect on its democratic progress since the return to civilian rule.

The Democracy Day celebration commemorates the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria's freest and fairest election, which was subsequently annulled by the military government.
