Three armed robbery suspects have been brought before a Chief Magistrate Court in Yola, Adamawa State, for allegedly terrorizing the Modibbo Adama University community.
The suspects, identified as Aliyu Bala, Yusuf Sale, and Abdullahi Abubakar, all residents of different addresses in Yola North Local Government Area, were arraigned on Tuesday, May 14, 2025.
According to court proceedings, the trio, along with 12 others currently at large, allegedly invaded Waya Ventures Villa and Salima Students Compound in Sabon Gari Futy, an area surrounding the university. Armed with offensive weapons, they reportedly subjected their victims to extreme fear while stealing properties valued at approximately N2.5 million.
All three defendants pleaded guilty to the charges during their arraignment. They admitted to robbing students of five laptops and 12 smartphones, which they subsequently sold to three individuals identified as Sani Sale, Jamilu Sani, and Bashir Ibrahim.
The case was initiated when eleven victims jointly filed a report with the police on April 2, 2025, stating that the defendants and several others had stormed their compounds earlier that day and robbed them of their valuables.
The defendants face charges of criminal conspiracy, robbery, and dishonestly receiving property stolen in the commission of brigandage or robbery. Sergeant Ahmed Abubakar, prosecuting on behalf of the Adamawa State Police Command, requested that the court read the First Information Report in a language the defendants would understand to facilitate their plea.
Following the defendants' guilty plea, the prosecutor requested an adjournment to allow the police to complete their investigation. The court subsequently ordered the remand of the defendants until May 27, 2025, when the case will continue.
This case highlights ongoing security concerns in university communities across Nigeria, where students are often targeted by criminal elements due to their possession of valuable electronic devices and other personal belongings.
