A prominent chieftain of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) in Ondo State, Tosin Ayeni, has officially resigned from the party, citing its inability to win elections and leadership challenges.
In his resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of the party in Oke Aro/Uro II Ward 9, Akure Local Government Area on Monday, Ayeni expressed frustration with the party's leadership structure and electoral prospects.
"The experience I have gathered in the NNPP is that the leadership of your party from the state to the national level is of no foresight," Ayeni stated in his resignation letter.
Ayeni, who initially won the NNPP governorship ticket for the 2024 election before withdrawing from the race, also served as the Campaign Director-General for the party during the November 16, 2024 governorship election in Ondo State.
His resignation comes just a day after Olugbenga Edema, the NNPP governorship candidate in the November 2024 election, also quit the party over alleged lack of sincerity in winning elections.
In his scathing critique, Ayeni described the party as being "filled with thorns and hungry pests" and alleged that the party had been "sold out." He further criticized the unusual practice of party leadership disowning their own candidates to support opponents.
"It is only in your party I see candidate being disowned by the leadership of the party to celebrate opponents," he noted, adding, "I do not belong to the mediocre, myopic and eccentric school of thought."
Responding to the resignation, Peter Olagookun, the state Chairman of NNPP, claimed that Ayeni's departure was not unexpected, revealing that he had already been suspended from the party prior to his resignation.
These back-to-back high-profile resignations signal growing internal challenges within the NNPP in Ondo State, potentially weakening the party's position as a political force in the region.
