Algeria's head coach, Farid Benstiti, has revealed his close relationship with Nigeria's football star Asisat Oshoala as both nations prepare for the upcoming CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Speaking to CAF Online, Benstiti disclosed that he previously worked with the Super Falcons forward during their time together in China, which has evolved into a friendship.

"Nigeria are the benchmark," Benstiti stated. "I had the pleasure of working with Asisat Oshoala in China. She's a friend now."

The Algerian coach went on to praise the Nigerian women's national team, describing them as not just Africa's best but among the elite teams globally. "Nigerians aren't just Africa's best. They are among the top 10 in the world," he added.

The 2025 WAFCON tournament is scheduled to commence in July, with Nigeria, Algeria, Tunisia, and Botswana drawn together in Group B. This grouping sets the stage for a potentially challenging series of matches as Algeria prepares to face the continent's most successful women's team.

Oshoala, who has established herself as one of Africa's most accomplished female footballers, continues to be a key figure for the Super Falcons as they aim to maintain their dominance in African women's football.

The comments from Benstiti highlight the respect Nigeria's women's team commands across the continent, even as other nations work to close the competitive gap ahead of the prestigious tournament.
