The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly sacked its Director of Refereeing, Désiré Noumandiez Doué, following the controversial VAR decision during the Women's African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final between Nigeria and Morocco.
Super Falcons defender, Oluwatosin Demehin, has finally broken her silence on the VAR incident that sparked heated debate during Nigeria's dramatic comeback victory against the host nation.
With just nine minutes remaining in the final and the score level at 2-2, Namibian referee Antsino Twanyanyukwa initially awarded Morocco a penalty after judging that Demehin had handled the ball in the box. However, following a VAR review led by Rwandan official Salima Mukansanga, the decision was overturned.
Speaking about the incident for the first time, Demehin revealed her emotions during the tense moment. "I was scared, but deep down I knew it wasn't a penalty," she told BoldSports. "The ball touched my hand, yes, but the way I was positioned, it wasn't unnatural."
Shortly after the controversial decision, Jennifer Echegini scored a dramatic 88th-minute winner, completing Nigeria's remarkable comeback from two goals down to secure a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation subsequently filed a formal complaint to CAF, alleging multiple officiating errors, particularly focusing on the reversed penalty call that might have changed the outcome of the final.
In the aftermath of the controversy, reports indicate that CAF has dismissed Director of Refereeing, Désiré Noumandiez Doué. Although Doué did not officiate the match himself, his responsibility for referee appointments placed him under intense scrutiny. His removal is reportedly part of CAF's broader initiative to restore confidence in officiating standards across African football.
The Super Falcons' victory has been celebrated across Nigeria, with various state governors and organizations rewarding the players for their achievement. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma awarded N70 million to Super Falcons players from the state, while national team players Troost-Ekong, Ademola Lookman, Ola Aina, and others gifted the team N24 million in recognition of their triumph.
A presidential dinner was also held to honor the champions, featuring performances by Nigerian artists including Teni, Flavour, and Timi Dakolo.
