Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has rewarded the Super Falcons with a sum of N20 million following their impressive 2-0 victory over Cameroon in a friendly match played on Tuesday.
The international friendly, which took place at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, saw Nigeria's women's national team dominate their Cameroonian counterparts with a commanding performance.
Super Falcons Shine Against Cameroon
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade emerged as the star of the match, netting both goals for the nine-time African champions. She opened the scoring in the 27th minute from the penalty spot before doubling Nigeria's advantage with a clinical finish just three minutes before halftime.
The victory serves as a significant morale booster for the Super Falcons as they prepare for the upcoming 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament.
Governor's Generous Gesture
Governor Abiodun, who was present at the match, announced the N20 million donation to the Nigerian team during the post-match ceremony. In a display of sportsmanship, the governor also awarded N10 million to the visiting Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon.
"This victory demonstrates the exceptional talent and determination of our Super Falcons. The donation is a token of appreciation for their outstanding performance and to motivate them ahead of the WAFCON tournament," the governor stated while presenting the cash reward.
WAFCON 2024 Preparations
The friendly match forms part of the Super Falcons' preparations for the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, where they will be seeking to reclaim their continental crown.
Under the guidance of coach Justine Madugu, the team is scheduled to begin their WAFCON campaign against Tunisia in Casablanca on Sunday, July 6. The coach has expressed satisfaction with the team's performance against Cameroon, highlighting their tactical discipline and attacking prowess.
The Super Falcons, as nine-time African champions, remain the most successful women's national team on the continent and will be looking to extend their dominance at the upcoming tournament.
