The Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Akure Zone 17, Ajani Omolabi, has urged Nigerians to provide timely and credible information about suspicious activities to help police combat crime more effectively across the country.
Speaking during a one-day familiarization visit to the Ekiti State Police Command in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday, AIG Omolabi emphasized that security agencies alone cannot achieve all that is required to fully protect the nation without public cooperation.
The AIG addressed a diverse group of stakeholders including religious leaders, transport unions, student unions, artisans, and market leaders, encouraging them to use technology to send information to the police that would help in preventing criminal activities.
"I urge you not to hoard information for whatever reason or material gains. Such information could be crucial in police investigations of crimes," Omolabi stated, assuring that his doors are always open to receiving credible and reliable information.
The AIG also issued a stern warning to criminals operating in states under his jurisdiction, saying: "To criminals, my warning to you is that you steer clear, because we will locate you and deal with you, in accordance with the law, if you refuse to change and live by the law."
During the visit, Omolabi commended Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, for the peace being enjoyed in the state and promised not to disappoint him. He also praised the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Joseph Eribo, for his proactive approach in maintaining peace and order.
In response, Commissioner Eribo thanked the AIG for the visit and appreciated his mentorship of officers in the zone as well as his leadership skills.
The AIG's call for public cooperation highlights the importance of community involvement in maintaining security and combating criminal activities across Nigeria.
