The Abia State government has announced the reopening of abattoirs in Lokpanta and Uzuakoli that were previously shut down due to unsanitary conditions. The facilities have undergone significant renovations to ensure they meet proper health standards.

Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, made this announcement on Monday while briefing journalists after the executive council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti. The reopening marks an important step in the state's efforts to improve public health standards.

In a related development, the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has commenced door-to-door waste collection in parts of Umuahia and Aba, as well as street-to-street refuse collection in areas of Abia North. This initiative is part of the government's broader environmental sanitation efforts.

ASEPA General Manager, Ogbonnaya Okereke, raised concerns about the unhealthy practice of processing meat with tire flames, which poses significant health risks to consumers. He revealed that the state government is planning to convert cow dung to biogas as an alternative, environmentally friendly solution to address this issue.

"The practice of using burning tires to process meat is dangerous and unhealthy. We are taking steps to provide safer alternatives through biogas conversion technology," Okereke stated.

In other news, the state government congratulated Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia for their historic achievement in qualifying for a CAF continental ticket next season.

On a somber note, the government announced that the late Commissioner for Labour and Employment, Sunny Onwuma, who passed away several weeks ago, will be laid to rest on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
