A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has sentenced 55-year-old Idris Yunusa to seven years imprisonment without the option of a fine for the sexual exploitation of a 15-year-old girl.

Justice S.M. Shuaibu delivered the judgment, which represents a significant application of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act of 2015, legislation designed to protect minors from abuse, exploitation, and trafficking.

Yunusa, who resides at Lamido Crescent in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, was found guilty of procuring and sexually exploiting the teenager who lives at Abuja Line in Badawa, also within Nassarawa.

While delivering the verdict, Justice Shuaibu emphasized the court's unwavering commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of vulnerable individuals, particularly minors. The judge cited Section 16(1) of the Act under which the convict was charged, stressing that the law provides no leniency for those who prey on underaged victims.

This case highlights Nigeria's ongoing efforts to combat sexual exploitation and human trafficking, particularly of minors, through strict enforcement of relevant legislation. Child protection advocates have welcomed the judgment as a deterrent to potential offenders.

The conviction serves as a reminder of the serious legal consequences for sexual crimes against minors in Nigeria, where authorities continue to strengthen enforcement mechanisms to protect vulnerable children from exploitation.
