Supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, have issued a strong warning against any attempts to prevent their principal from participating in the 2027 presidential race.
The supporters, widely known as Obidients, made this declaration in response to statements by Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, who claimed that Obi would not secure any party's ticket for the upcoming election.
During a Channels Television interview on Wednesday, Bwala boldly predicted that Obi would only serve as a Director-General in the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC). The presidential aide further alleged that Obi had lost 50% of his voters from the 2023 election and that President Tinubu would significantly increase his vote share in the next election.
Dr. Chibuzor Obiesili, a member of the State Coordinating Council Collegiate team of the Obidient Movement in Abia, swiftly countered these claims, describing Bwala's statements as suspicious and concerning.
"Is Bwala now telling Nigerians that the presidency determines who gets a party ticket in 2027?" Obiesili questioned, challenging the presidency to clarify the remarks or face accountability for what appears to be an attempt to undermine democratic processes.
The Obidient representative firmly rejected Bwala's assertion that Obi had lost half of his South East voter base, dismissing it as "wishful thinking and empty political hallucination." He emphasized that the movement would "stoutly resist" any attempts to obstruct Obi's presidential ambitions in the upcoming election cycle.
This exchange highlights growing tensions as political maneuvering intensifies ahead of the 2027 presidential race, with Obi's supporters demonstrating their commitment to ensuring their candidate has a fair opportunity to contest.
The confrontation between the presidency and Obi's supporters suggests that the political landscape is already taking shape for what promises to be another highly contested election, with the Obidient Movement showing no signs of diminishing support for their preferred candidate.
