Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has rewarded seven Super Falcons players of Imo origin with plots of land and cash gifts of N30 million each following Nigeria's triumph at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The governor hosted the players at a special dinner held at the Banquet Hall of Government House in Owerri, where he announced the generous rewards as part of the state's celebration of the national team's continental success.

"This honor for our Imo-born players is part of our efforts to domesticate and celebrate the remarkable feat achieved by these Nigerian female footballers," Governor Uzodinma stated during the ceremony.

The seven honored players include goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who is recognized as Africa's number one female goalkeeper, alongside Jennifer Echegini, Tochukwu Oluchi, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Osinachi Ohale, Michelle Alozie, and Ifeoma Onumonu.

Governor Uzodinma expressed pride in the fact that a significant portion of the victorious Super Falcons squad hails from Imo State. He pledged continued support for the development of women's football in the state, with the aim of increasing Imo's representation in the Nigeria Women's League.

"The state is proud of the sterling performance of these women," the governor remarked. "We will continue to support them as they strive to make the nation proud and bring more honor to the country."

Uzodinma also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for "setting the pace in celebrating excellent performance as exhibited by the Nigeria Super Falcons following their heroic victory at the just concluded tournament."

The governor used the occasion to encourage women and young girls to "brace up and compete for the best," highlighting the achievements of the Super Falcons as inspiration for aspiring female athletes.

Commissioner for Sports Development, Obinna Onyeocha, who was present at the event, praised Governor Uzodinma for his passion for sports development and the substantial investments his administration has made in the sector.

"This event is a manifestation of the governor's commitment to sports development in Imo State," Onyeocha noted.

The ceremony was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, and friends and relatives of the players, underscoring the significance of the occasion for both the athletes and the state.
