President Bola Tinubu has revealed that he initially avoided watching the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final due to concerns about his blood pressure, only to witness Nigeria's remarkable comeback victory against Morocco.
The President made this disclosure while hosting the triumphant Super Falcons at Aso Villa on Monday evening following their dramatic 3-2 victory over the tournament hosts in Rabat.
"Honestly, I did not want to watch the match. I didn't want high blood pressure," Tinubu admitted to the gathering. "But people came into my room and turned on my TV to that channel."
The President described his emotional journey during the match, saying, "When it was 2-0, I got very restless and very offended. But I was still there watching."
Despite his initial reluctance, Tinubu expressed admiration for the team's performance in the face of adversity. "I was impressed by the indomitable spirit of resilience, determination and courage of the team," he stated.
The Super Falcons staged a remarkable comeback in Sunday's final, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Morocco 3-2 and claim the continental title on Moroccan soil.
The reception at Aso Villa highlights the significance of the victory for Nigerian sports, with the President personally congratulating the players and coaching staff for their achievement.
This WAFCON triumph adds to Nigeria's impressive record in women's football on the continent, further cementing the Super Falcons' status as Africa's most successful women's national team.
