The Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation has responded to growing concerns from media professionals following the suspension of Badegi FM, a Minna-based radio station, by the Niger State Government.
According to reports, the suspension directive was issued by Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago during an expanded APC caucus meeting in Minna on August 1, 2025. The Minister of Information and National Orientation was present at the meeting when the announcement was made.
Governor Bago reportedly justified the suspension based on allegations of unethical broadcasting practices and inciting content directed against the state government.
In an official statement signed by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, the ministry acknowledged the state government's concerns while clarifying jurisdictional boundaries.
"The Ministry recognises the issues raised by the state government. However, it is important to clarify that matters relating to the suspension or withdrawal of broadcasting licences are legally within the jurisdiction of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the statutory regulatory body," the statement read.
The Information Ministry welcomed the Niger State Government's decision to escalate the matter to the NBC, describing it as "the appropriate channel to address such allegations of misconduct."
The Minister has appealed for calm among all parties involved, assuring that the NBC possesses the necessary mechanisms to resolve the issue in a fair and impartial manner, in accordance with broadcasting regulations.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between state governments and media organizations in Nigeria, raising questions about press freedom and the proper channels for addressing concerns about media content.
