Suspected herdsmen have launched a deadly attack on Tse-Nyibiam, a village near Ngban in Nyiev Council Ward of Guma Local Government Area, Benue State, claiming the lives of a mother and her son.
The victims, identified as Mlumun Iorhen Igbawua and her son, Terkimbir Iorhen Igbawua, were reportedly killed while tending to their rice farm on Thursday. In a tragic twist, this was the same farm where their husband and father, Benjamin Iorhen Igbawua, was murdered earlier this year in May.
According to local sources who spoke to BenriNews, the mother and son had returned to weed the rice field that had remained uncultivated since the initial attack that claimed Benjamin's life. His body reportedly remains at the morgue, still awaiting burial.
A family member revealed that Terkimbir's wife was initially declared missing following the brutal attack. However, she narrowly escaped death despite being tortured by the assailants. She has since been located and reunited with her family.
This latest incident adds to the growing concerns about security in Benue's farming communities, particularly in Guma Local Government Area, which has witnessed recurring attacks attributed to suspected herdsmen in recent years.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. The attack has reportedly heightened tensions in neighboring communities, with some residents expressing fears about returning to their farms.
