The Imo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned Governor Hope Uzodinma's continued silence over the recent killings of innocent citizens in Ideato North Local Government Area, describing it as an act of high negligence that demonstrates a lack of concern for citizens' welfare.
According to the opposition party, since the tragic incident occurred on July 24, Governor Uzodinma has yet to make any public statement addressing the situation or visit the affected communities to offer condolences.
In a statement released by the party's spokesperson, Lancelot Obiaku, the PDP emphasized that an incident of such magnitude should have prompted the Governor to address the state and personally visit the area to show solidarity with the affected families.
"The party commiserates with the families and friends of the victims, the entire Arondizuogu and Umualaoma villages, Ideato North, and all Imolites who are sorrowing following the carnage," Obiaku stated.
The PDP spokesperson highlighted that the Ideato killings are part of a disturbing pattern of security breaches across the state. He cited several recent incidents, including a May 8 attack in Umuna, Okigwe LGA, where unknown gunmen reportedly killed over 20 people and destroyed numerous properties.
Obiaku also referenced a kidnapping incident in Ngor-Okpala where 26 passengers were abducted on the Owerri-Aba road, with one reportedly killed on the spot. "The whereabouts of the remaining 25 are still unknown," he added.
Other communities facing security challenges, according to the PDP, include Agwa in Oguta LGA, Amakohia-Ubi in Owerri West LGA, as well as Avu, Obinze, and Okuku, which have reportedly experienced kidnappings, ritual killings, and terrorist attacks.
"No words, no empathy, no support, and no tangible action or step to end insecurity in the State. Apparently, the Governor now sees these attacks as normal occurrences with which he has no business. He has become a Governor who has turned his back on the State he governs. Uzodinma has completely abandoned the leadership and governance of the State in preference for chasing shadows in Abuja," Obiaku stated.
The PDP urged the State Government to collaborate with relevant security forces to activate mechanisms that would not only bring the perpetrators to justice but also prevent further attacks. The party also called on Governor Uzodinma to "showcase his administrative capabilities, if there is any, and offer responsible governance and stop dwelling on mere titleship."
The rising insecurity in Imo State continues to be a major concern for residents and stakeholders, with many calling for more decisive action from the state government to address the situation.
