The Abia State Government has announced plans to conduct integrity tests on all buildings above two floors across the state following a recent three-storey building collapse in Umuahia.

Mr. Kingsley Agomuo, General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), disclosed this on Tuesday during a press briefing at the Government House, Umuahia, following an executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

According to Agomuo, the government will carry out a thorough investigation into the collapsed building while implementing comprehensive integrity tests to protect citizens.

"In addition, every building above two floors is going to be subjected to an integrity test. This is to assure every citizen that the places you are staying, you are fully protected, and such incidents will not reoccur going forward," Agomuo stated.

He emphasized that the state government has zero tolerance for professional misconduct and will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of residents. Existing buildings will undergo integrity assessments, while new constructions must adhere strictly to building regulations and standards.

In a related development, Mr. Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, revealed that the Abia State Ministry of Lands and Housing will conduct an aerial imagery survey covering the entire 4,795.74 square kilometers of the state. The initiative will include radar and 2D line mapping of Aba and Umuahia.

Kanu explained that this comprehensive mapping project aims to enhance the ministry's efficiency in service delivery and strengthen its overall functions in land administration and housing development across the state.

The announcement comes as part of broader efforts by the Otti administration to improve infrastructure safety and urban planning in Abia State.
