The Ondo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a suspect who allegedly murdered his girlfriend, a final-year student of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).
According to DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the command's spokesperson, the victim was initially reported missing by her employer after she failed to deliver N2 million given to her for a Point of Sale (POS) transaction.
"The victim was a final-year student of AAUA. She was declared missing initially by her boss who is running a POS business after giving her the sum of N2 million to be given to someone," Ayanlade explained.
"The money was not deposited and the lady was not found which was why the boss reported her missing," he added.
Police investigations led to a grim discovery when they tracked the victim's cell phone, which pointed to her boyfriend's residence. Upon arrival, officers found the room locked and had to force entry.
"When the police got to her boyfriend's house, his room was locked, they had to break the door into the room and found her decomposing body inside her boyfriend's room," the police spokesperson revealed.
While the boyfriend remains at large, authorities have arrested the landlord and several other individuals suspected of facilitating the crime. The police have withheld the victim's identity, citing the sensitive nature of gender-based violence cases.
The incident sparked peaceful protests by AAUA students, temporarily disrupting traffic in the university town. DSP Ayanlade confirmed that police have addressed the protesters' concerns and normalcy has returned to the area.
Students' Union Condemns Rising Violence
Mr. Akeem Salami, President of the AAUA Students' Union Government (SUG), expressed deep concern over what he described as "incessant killing of students" at the university.
"We received the first shocking news of two students that were gruesomely murdered, having been kidnapped for days. We were further bewildered with the news that the primary suspects of the crime are indigenes," Salami stated.
The SUG president revealed that the female student was stabbed to death and "left to decompose in her boyfriend's room for more than three days."
He called on the state government, police, and other relevant authorities to take decisive action to end the violence against students in the community.
This tragic incident follows reports of two other AAUA students who were allegedly kidnapped and murdered recently, raising serious security concerns within the university community.
