Former Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on political matters, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has expressed concern over the president's silence regarding rumors suggesting plans to drop Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 election.
Baba-Ahmed, who resigned from his position in the Tinubu administration approximately three months ago, made these remarks during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today program on Wednesday.
"I would be very curious to find out what it is that makes all these stories about dropping him (Shettima). I think, somewhere along the line, to be honest, the President should have done something a long time ago," Baba-Ahmed stated during the interview.
The speculation about Vice President Shettima's political future has been circulating in political circles for weeks, despite presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga dismissing the claim as a 'non-issue' during an interview in June. At that time, Onanuga stated that President Tinubu would choose his running mate only after accepting the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination.
However, Baba-Ahmed believes that the President himself should have personally addressed and refuted these rumors if they were truly baseless, rather than leaving the matter to his spokesperson.
The comments come amid growing speculation about potential changes in the APC's leadership ticket for the upcoming 2027 presidential elections, with some political observers suggesting that internal party dynamics might influence President Tinubu's choice of running mate.
Political analysts note that the relationship between the President and Vice President is crucial for the administration's stability and the party's electoral prospects in 2027. The persistent rumors, if left unaddressed by the President himself, could potentially create uncertainty within the party ranks.
