The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to immortalize former President Muhammadu Buhari by naming a national monument after him, following his recent passing in London.
The resolution emerged during a plenary session where Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion honoring the late president, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in London.
In his motion, Bamidele expressed profound sorrow over Buhari's death while celebrating his contributions to Nigeria's development. "As I move this motion today, I am reminded of the transient nature of human life. However, our consolation is that our former President led a successful and fulfilled life, both as a gallant soldier who rose to the peak of his military career, and as a democrat who served two uninterrupted terms as President," Bamidele stated.
The Senate Leader recounted Buhari's political journey, noting his persistence through multiple presidential campaigns before finally winning in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform and securing re-election in 2019.
"As President, he embarked on numerous reforms that contributed to the socio-economic development of the country," Bamidele added, emphasizing that Buhari's legacy would remain etched in the minds of Nigerians.
The Senate also commended President Bola Tinubu's administration for organizing a befitting state funeral for the late president and acknowledged the seven-day national mourning period declared by the current administration, during which national flags were flown at half-mast across the country.
Several senators contributed to the motion, with Senator Abdul'aziz Yari (APC, Zamfara) describing Buhari as "a man of integrity, incorruptible and God-fearing." Senator Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa) highlighted Buhari's unique distinction of having served as both military Head of State and democratically elected President.
Dickson also praised President Tinubu for the respect accorded to Buhari in death, describing it as setting "a basic minimum national standard to honor a deceased President."
Senate President Godswill Akpabio concluded the session by stating that "the nation would continue to miss Buhari for years to come."
The upper legislative chamber observed a minute's silence in honor of the late president and suspended plenary for one week as a mark of respect.
