The President of the South-South Youths Initiative, Comrade Saviour Oscar, has expressed profound sadness over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the late leader as a "Change mantra" who transformed Nigeria's political landscape.
BenriNews reports that the former Nigerian President died on Sunday at an undisclosed hospital in the United Kingdom at the age of 82.
In his tribute, Oscar emphasized that the late Nigerian leader would be remembered for his unwavering commitment to the "War against Corruption and Indiscipline," which became a defining feature of his administration.
"The late President's administration launched a notable anti-corruption campaign, leading to high-profile arrests and asset recoveries, including the prosecution of several cases and recovery of Abacha loot," Oscar stated.
The youth leader highlighted several key achievements of Buhari's administration, including the implementation of the UNEP report on Ogoniland and the introduction of policies aimed at diversifying Nigeria's economy, which significantly boosted the non-oil sector and national GDP.
"The Treasury Single Account (TSA), one of his initiatives, enhanced financial transparency across government operations. He also spearheaded social investment programs like N-Power and TraderMoni, which served as economic relief for millions of Nigerian beneficiaries," he added.
While acknowledging that Buhari's administration faced significant challenges, Oscar maintained that the late president laid a solid foundation for successive administrations to build upon. He noted that Buhari's government took a strong stance against Boko Haram, achieving territorial gains while addressing other security challenges, "although insecurity is yet to be completely surmounted."
"We must consider the lessons from our predecessors, including the late Buhari, build on their successes, and learn from their shortcomings," Oscar remarked, while praying for the repose of the former president's soul.
The South-South youth leader concluded by calling for the prioritization of inclusivity and robust citizen engagement on issues concerning economic growth, security, and infrastructure development, emphasizing that Buhari's legacies would remain indelible, especially in the minds of Nigerian youths.
