The All Progressives Congress (APC) has appointed Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, the current Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, as its new National Chairman. The appointment was confirmed on Thursday during the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Yilwatda succeeds Abdullahi Ganduje, who resigned last month citing health concerns. Following Ganduje's resignation, the Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, had been serving in an acting capacity.
Political observers had anticipated that the NEC would ratify Dalori's position and establish a timeframe for organizing an elective National Convention to select a permanent chairman. However, the committee opted to appoint Yilwatda directly to the position.
The crucial NEC meeting was attended by prominent APC figures including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, among other party leaders.
Prior to the appointment, reports had indicated that the APC was considering candidates from the North Central region to produce Ganduje's successor, aligning with the party's zoning arrangements.
This leadership change comes at a time when the APC is navigating various political dynamics, including recent defections in states like Osun, where the party has been involved in strategic political maneuvers.
As the new chairman takes office, he faces the challenge of unifying the party and strengthening its position ahead of future electoral contests.
