Datti Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside Peter Obi as vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election, has declared his readiness to step aside from the ticket in the upcoming 2027 elections.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV's Prime Time on Tuesday night, Baba-Ahmed expressed his continued support for Obi's presidential ambitions, regardless of whether he remains on the ticket.
"Labour Party's arms are open to welcome back Peter Obi. I would like Peter Obi to win the nomination of Labour Party and contest in 2027, with or without me," Baba-Ahmed stated during the interview.
The statement comes amid speculation about potential political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. Baba-Ahmed also addressed rumors about his possible defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), expressing skepticism about such a move.
"My own thinking is that you should convince me why I should go to ADC. Where was ADC in 2023 when Labour Party got 10 million votes? I'm yet to be convinced to leave LP," he emphasized, reaffirming his loyalty to the Labour Party.
Baba-Ahmed's comments highlight the ongoing dynamics within opposition politics in Nigeria as parties begin positioning themselves for the next electoral cycle. The Labour Party, which emerged as a significant third force in the 2023 elections, garnered approximately 10 million votes according to Baba-Ahmed's statement.
Political analysts suggest that Baba-Ahmed's willingness to potentially step aside demonstrates a focus on strengthening the opposition's chances rather than personal ambition, though it remains to be seen how the Labour Party's internal politics will evolve as the election approaches.
