Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has sent a clear message to South Africa's Banyana Banyana that Nigeria is fully determined to reclaim the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy in 2024.
The Nigerian striker made these comments during her pre-match interview ahead of Tuesday's highly anticipated semi-final clash between the two African powerhouses.
"The fact that we want to win the tournament is a great motivation to bring the trophy back to Nigeria," Okoronkwo stated confidently. "We go into every game with the same mentality to want to win, regardless of what is in front of us. We are prepared and ready to win tomorrow."
The forward emphasized that the Super Falcons are focused solely on their own performance rather than their opponents' statistics. "We're not really looking at the other team's stats; we just focus on us and what we're going to do tomorrow," she added.
This semi-final encounter carries additional significance as South Africa defeated Nigeria via a penalty shoot-out in the 2022 edition of the tournament. Both teams have shown impressive form in the current competition, with Nigeria overcoming Zambia and South Africa eliminating Senegal in their respective quarter-final matches.
The crucial semi-final match is scheduled to take place at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Tuesday evening, with both teams vying for a spot in the final and the chance to be crowned African champions.
Meanwhile, South Africa's coach Desiree Ellis has indicated that her team has specific plans for the encounter against the Super Falcons, setting the stage for what promises to be a tactical battle between two of Africa's finest women's football teams.
