Nigeria's Super Falcons have secured the top position in Group B at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a goalless draw with Algeria in their final group stage match on Saturday.
Justine Madugu's side finished with seven points from three matches, having won their previous two encounters. The nine-time African champions will now face Zambia's Copper Queens in the quarter-finals scheduled for Friday.
Despite dominating possession throughout the match, the Super Falcons were unable to break down a resilient Algerian defense. Nigerian forwards Ifeoma Onumonu and Jennifer Echegini came close to scoring in the first half but couldn't convert their chances.
The second half saw the Nigerian team struggle to create clear scoring opportunities against the well-organized Fennecs, who held firm to secure a valuable point.
Algeria finished second in Group B with five points from their three matches, while Tunisia and Botswana played to a 1-1 draw in the other group fixture.
Before the tournament, Jennifer Echegini had expressed confidence in the team's preparation, stating: "The Super Falcons are not scared of any opposition." Coach Madugu had also emphasized the team's determination to maintain their unbeaten streak throughout the competition.
The quarter-final matchup against Zambia will be crucial for Nigeria as they continue their quest for a record-extending tenth WAFCON title.
