Amnesty International Nigeria has strongly condemned the recent deadly attack in Plateau State, describing it as a "horrific and shameful display of government failure" to protect Nigerian citizens.

The attack, which occurred on Monday in Bindi-Jebbu of the Tahoss community in Riyom Local Government Area, resulted in the deaths of at least 27 residents, with reports indicating the death toll may be higher.

According to Amnesty International, the attackers deliberately targeted entire families, locking them in their homes before killing them one by one. Those who attempted to escape were reportedly shot down in cold blood.

"Entire families were locked up in their rooms and slaughtered one by one. Those who tried to escape were shot," Amnesty Nigeria stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

The human rights organization directly criticized President Bola Tinubu's administration, arguing that despite repeated claims of tasking security agencies to end the killings, the mounting death toll tells a different story.

"President Bola Tinubu claims repeatedly to have 'tasked' security agencies to end the killings, but the mounting death toll clearly tells a different story," the statement read.

Amnesty International has called for an impartial investigation into the killings and demanded accountability for those responsible. The organization also emphasized the need for urgent reforms to prevent such violence from recurring in the future.

"The Nigerian authorities must impartially investigate these attacks to ensure that suspected perpetrators are held to account. More concrete steps must be taken to end the relentless bloodshed in Plateau state, in which typically, gunmen attack farming communities and slaughter people and raze homes," Amnesty stated.

The organization highlighted a disturbing pattern of impunity and warned that government inaction is deepening insecurity and eroding public trust in the administration's ability to protect its citizens.

"The government of Nigeria has an obligation to protect the people. The rising death toll in some states and increasing impunity by gunmen shows just how badly the authorities are failing in this responsibility," the group concluded.

The Bindi-Jebbu massacre represents the latest incident in a troubling wave of violence that has plagued Plateau State for years. Farming communities in the region have faced repeated attacks from suspected armed militias, with security forces struggling to contain the situation.

A local youth leader confirmed that the death toll from the attack has risen above 30, highlighting the severity of the situation and the ongoing security challenges facing the region.

The Plateau State Government has appealed for calm following the attacks, while Governor Mutfwang has urged security agencies to adopt new tactics to tackle the persistent insecurity in the state.

This incident comes as Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau states have vowed to take joint action to end herdsmen attacks in the region, signaling a potential shift in approach to addressing the security crisis.
